ORF9b is the unique accessory protein of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV, arising from alternative open reading frame within nucleocapsid gene. It is important for virus-host interaction and pathogenesis. It interacts with multifunctional adapter protein TOM70 which is anchored to the mitochondrial outer membrane and involved in the activation of antiviral immune responses. Antibodies against ORF9b were also found present in the sera of convalescent SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 patients.
