VZV ORF7 (UniProtKB – Q6QCP9) is the ortholog of HSV-1 protein UL51. Zhang et al showed that ORF7 is required for viral replication in skin organ cultures (a skin tropism factor) (PLoS Pathog. 2010 Jul 1;6:e1000971. doi: 10.1371) and shortly Selariu et al showed how ORF7 is a neurotropic factor, where the deletion completely abolishes viral spread in human nervous tissue (J Virol. 2012 Aug;86(16):8614-24. doi: 10.1128. The later manuscript describes a monoclonal antibody to ORF7. Our monoclonal antibody to ORF7, VZ 7.05, reveals a protein with dominant localisation in Golgi networks and a dominant band around 35 kDa in western blot. Our anti-VZV ORF7 antibody VZ 7.05 works in ELISA (on immunogen), IF (on VZV infected cells) and each LOT is validated for Western blot (of VZV infected cell lysates, described in J Virol. 2013 Jun;87(12):6943-54.).

ORF48 encodes an alkaline nuclease (J Virol. 87: 11936-11938). ORF48 protein is homologous to herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) UL12, human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) UL98 and Epstein Barr virus (EBV) BGLF5.
The ORF50 gene of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) encodes glycoprotein M which is conserved among all herpesviruses. VZV gM is predicted to be an eight-transmembrane envelope glycoprotein modified with a complex N-linked oligosaccharide.
VZV ORF19 encodes a large, N-terminal subunit 1 of the viral ribonucleotide reductase, which together with the small subunit, encoded by the VZV ORF 18, forms the ribonucleotide reductase holoenzyme complex (RNR).
